Career Management Program for Stanford Staff (COMPASS Program)

The COMPASS Program's are designed to help all Stanford staff manage their career process, development, and path, as well as grow and thrive in their current positions.

Be sure to explore the new COMPASS service, Career Counseling Network (CCN), a network of local career counselors with whom staff can work independently, using their STAP funds to pay for the discounted individual sessions.

Is your career in the doldrums? Are you feeling stagnant? Do you fantasize about winning the lottery? If you’re tired of hearing yourself complain and ready to take action, come to this COMPASS class to discover how you can breathe new life into
your career. You will:

  • Clarify what’s satisfying and not satisfying in your work;
  • Identify what parts of your job feel stale;
  • Identify areas over which you have control, so you can
    focus your attention there;
  • Analyze the attitudes and habitual patterns that may be
    getting in your way, and understand what you would like
    to change;
  • Discover concrete steps you can take to revitalize
    your career;
  • Develop a detailed action plan and system for following
    through on your intentions.

You can look forward to increased confidence and enthusiasm for work that is full of heart and meaning. The format is highly interactive,
including presentation, discussion, inquiry, storytelling, and the creative arts. You will learn new practical tools to help you do what you love for a living and how to apply these tools immediately in your everyday life.

Teleseminar

This COMPASS teleseminar is designed for employees with fewer than 30 college credits who want to pursue their degree or who are new to the college experience and need help navigating the college maze. Before the course begins participants will receive and complete a learning styles inventory. Here are the topics we will cover:


  • Choosing a major;
  • Balancing work, life, and school;
  • Taking placement tests;
  • What you should know about learning styles;
  • Improving your study skills;
  • Transferring credits;
  • Gaining credits for certificates and military and
    work experience;
  • Local and distance learning options for degrees;
  • What the SkillScan assessment is all about.
